Imagine being president. What changes will you bring about and what polices will you bring about?

Well this was the question l asked a group of five varsity students. For the purpose of this post we will call them A, B, C, D and E. Mind you all the people questioned are Zimbabwean, although one is currently studying in a university out of the country but he does not spend six months without coming back to Zimbabwe for a visit.

A-     If l was to be Zim president l would try to boost agriculture because with full stomachs people are happy. I would also try to make sure all the money from Marange goes to the government and not to individuals. The third and final thing that l would do is ensure that all people who beat others because of politics pay for it.

B-      The first and for most thing l would do is build a big jail so as to accommodate all the corrupt members of parliament, civil servants and members of the armed forces. The next thing l would do is have a land audit and take away land from the ones who have multiple farms. The last thing l would do is to, get some of the agricultural graduates that our universities and agricultural institutions all over Zimbabwe heavily involved into farming. As said earlier l would take farms from those with more than one, these farms l would then give to the agricultural graduates and back them with funds so that they can practise what they have learnt.

C-      Well l would try to rid the country of corruption as the first thing. The second thing is make sure all young people of school going age are able to go to school and they have the resources needed for them to excel in school, for education emancipates. Lastly as president l would try to solve the electricity problem in the country for l think our industries can boost their productivity by having electricity every time.

D-     If l was president, l would for a start keep the multiple currencies because it is better than the days of Zim dollar, now at least there are things in the shops. I would also try to reduce the rate of unemployment in the country by trying to get more investors in the country and l would make sure Zimbabwe can produce enough electricity.

E-      Upon being president l would repair all roads some of our roads are in a bad state l can`t understand what is happening. I would also make sure there are opportunities for the youth to succeed and here l am talking about youth empowerment. As the youth l don`t feel there are a lot of chances for us to make it in the current Zimbabwe. For example if you look at the land reform, the youth were marginalized there. People as young as 21 most could not get land as they were told they were too young. What is that? That is failure to empower the youth because that 21 year old may have an idea that he wants to try out and he is not given the platform. I think my last thing would be create investment opportunities for foreign investors. Look at my town Bulawayo. It is a shell, a shadow of itself. We used to say “Ntuthu Ziyatunqa” (smoke rising up to the air from the Byo power station) but now look what “ntuthu is tunqaring” (smoke is rising from the power station).

These were views of some of the youths we have in Zimbabwe; it is unfortunate that l could not bring a large sample of youths but maybe in the future. This is just part of the conversation that l had with these people and suffice it to say what an eye opener l had. For your views and please email imibono@hotmail.com.
